Yemen Cinema

Yemen Cinema is not very well known because it is just starting to form however there is one film that has had great success. The name of the film is "A New Day in Old Sana'a", Directed and written by Bader Ben Hirsi. This movie was released to the U.S. November 10, 2006. This movie was filmed entirely in the city of Sana'a. This film is about a young man, Tariq who comes from an upper class family. He has an arranged marriage with a woman, who is daughter to a very wealthy man in there society. However one night he comes across a women dancing in the street and her beauty causes him to have strong feelings for her. This is when he faces a difficult decision, he can either do what is "respectable" and "proper" by following through with the arranged marriage, or he would go with his hearts feelings and risk his families name by running away and marrying the lower class women whom he has fallen in love with.

Article: Security Threats to Yemen Create Dilemma for United States

This article talks about a problem faced by the U.S. and Yemen. There are 100 Yemeni prisoners who are at Guantanamo . This is a problem because they will not automatically be put into prison and therefore can be a threat to Yemen and the U.S. This is a big threat because if Yemen cannot deal with this effectively there is a big chance of Yemen facing some very uncertain times that will most likely end in blood. and also because the threat of a terrorist attack in either country. The article then goes on to explain that Yemen is currently a democratic country and has had the same president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, for many years; and is planning to have his son be the successor.

The article then goes on to describe the three major threats faced by Yemen. The first of the threats is The Secessionist Movement in the South. This happen because Yemen used to be divide into 2 states Yemen and South Yemen and after a war was won by Saleh the unity occured. After this many Yemeni's from the South had a resentment toward Saleh and since then have regrouped and formed a threat for Yemen. The next was the Houthi Insurgency in the North. This is a problem because there could be a possible major military campaign by the Believing Youth's. The third threat is the Al-Qaeda and other militant Jihadist group. Recently an Al-Qaeda leader announced he was supporting the Secessionist movement in the south.

Yemen in WWI

Before WWI Yemen was separated by three different groups; the far west coast was part of the Ottoman Empire, the whole southern coast was under British rule and the rest, about two thirds of it, was an independent state. However things changed after WWI was over. Because of the Sykes-Picot agreement Britain now had control over the whole country of Yemen, instead of just the southern coast.

Yemen History (661-1258)

Yemen first became noticed because of its production of frankincense. Frankincense a very popular commodity in that part of the world. Before this however Yemen was occupied by the Minaean kingdom however around the year 750 the Sabaean Kingdom took over and established the Frankincense production and trade. 

The previous settlers in Yemen had already established Islam as the main religion and it has stayed that way even today.

• Located in Wadi Dhahr, near Sana'a
• One of Imam Yahya's many palaces
• Went through restoration from 1994-1999
• 7 Stories high with 35 rooms

4. Queen Arwa Mosque

• Located in Dhu Jiblah, Yemen
• Built from 1088-1089
