  • An Islamic Building, in the Capital city of Sana'a
  • Cost Around $60 million to build
  • Total area is about 27,300 square meters
  • Can fit 45,000 people
2. Bab Al


  • Gateway into Capital city of Sana'a
3. Dar Al-Hajar


  • Located in Wadi Dhahr, near Sana'a
  • One of Imam Yahya's many palaces
  • Went through restoration from 1994-1999
  • 7 Stories high with 35 rooms
4. Queen Arwa Mosque



  • Located in Dhu Jiblah, Yemen
  • Built from 1088-1089

  • Believe in the first four Caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali)
  • Accept leader chosen by the Umma
  • Main beliefs based on the Qur'an
  • Strictly Monotheistic
  • Celebrate Ashura
Ashura:
  • Celebrated on 10th of Muharram (First month of Islamic calendar)
  • Celebrates death of Husayn from the Battle of Karbala
  • Public signs of grief
  • Inflicting pain such as, cutting of oneself, is used to reflect the suffering Husayn went through

Islam in Yemen

Role of Islam:
Islam is the main religion in the country and plays a big role. It affects decisions made by the government and therefore has a major impact in Yemen

Islamic Distribution in Yemen:
35% of the Islamic population are Shi'a
65% of the Islamic population are Sunni

Arrival of Islam:
Islam arrived in Yemen while Muhammad was still arrived. It was first introduced around the year 630 A.D.

Yemen Religion

Primary Religion:
The primary religion in Yemen is Sunni Muslim, with the highest population in the north,

Other Religions:
The other religions include Shi'a Muslim, as well as small Christian and Hindu communities

Relationships:
Yemen gives its people the freedom of religion, and respects all different kinds. However they say that Islamic is the state religion and therefore that is the main source of legislation.

Ancient Yemen

Ancient Yemen
A) Yemen was not in any of the major locations such as, Mesopotamia, or Upper Egypt, it was just classified as South Arabia.

B) The main language that is, and has been, spoken in Yemen is Arabic

C) On of the most notable ancient structures in Yemen is The Bar'an Temple in Ma'rib, Yemen. It was built in the 10th century B.C.
